For the next two days (Sept 13-14) YouTube is testing a new platform which enables broadcasters to stream live video directly into YouTube channels.
Live sports/events are the one thing that is missing from online entertainment. And I have a feeling that making this content available would all but sign the fate of traditional cable. YouTube has already signed a deal with the Indian Premier League to stream live cricket matches, so other sports leagues, conferences, and concerts could be right around the corner.
Another extremely successful live YouTube event was the U2 concert (Oct 25/09) that they streamed to 10 million people with the help of Akamai. It was absolutely flawless and very impressive.
“YouTube has brought in four content partners: Howcast, Next New Networks, Rocketboom and Young Hollywood. The test platform will be live for the next two days, starting at 8:00 a.m. PT. You can find the neatly embedded schedule of programming below.”
