Aside from their free turn-by-turn app, Google Goggles was the other application that I was most jealous of on the Android OS. And now, it will be coming to the iPhone!!

Google Goggles uses image recognition to let you take a picture to preform a Google search. If it’s in their database it will recognize the image and display the results. Essentially acting in a similar way to QR codes. Right now their database is limited, but they have said that in the future you will be able to take a picture of anything to return information on the object.

You can also check out the SnapTell app (iTunes Link) that works (right now) in a very similar way for books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and video games.

Another cool feature is the ability to take a picture of text in a foreign language and translate it to your own (ie. French to English). This is going to make reading a menu in other countries a breeze.

“The Goggles application can scan books, album covers, product logos, locations, and works of art. In May, the company also added integration with its translation tool Google Translate to let users instantly translate scanned text into other languages, which we found to work reasonably well.”
